Gustar and Preferir

This month, Facebook celebrates its 10th birthday (see a free Spanish news article and audio on Facebook’s 10th anniversary on the Mary Glasgow website). The Spanish version was launched in 2008 thanks to a team of volunteer translators. Since then I have always encouraged my students to use Facebook in Spanish so that they can experience learning a language in a kind of “immersion environment”. Facebook is also great to teach the infamous verb “gustar“. We spend most of our time on Facebook liking stuff so why not do it in Spanish?

On our website, most of our students left comments on our free news articles. We have noticed that they don’t always properly use “preferir” and “gustar” so this week I have created an infographic explaining the use and conjugation of these two verbs.

As an extension task, you could ask your students to work in pairs to find out 5 things their partner likes and 5 things they dislike by using “¿Qué (no) te gusta?”. They could then discuss their lists by asking each other  “¿Qué prefieres?” before sharing their answers with the class.

Este mes Facebook cumple 10 años (podéis ver un artículo gratuito con Podcast sobre este tema en nuestra web). La versión española de Facebook no se lanzó hasta 2008. Desde entonces siempre animo a mis alumnos a que usen Facebook en español para que puedan disfrutar de una especie de inmersión lingüística en las redes sociales. Facebook también es muy útil para practicar el verbo “gustar” ya que nos pasamos media vida “gustando” cosas en esta red social.

No hemos dado cuenta de que la mayor parte de los alumnos suscritos a nuestras revistas no ven bien la diferencia entre “gustar” y “preferir”. Suelen confundirse en su conjugación como podemos ver muchas veces en el apartado de comentarios de las noticias semanales. Para ayudaros a repasar este tema en clase, he preparado una sencilla infografía sobre verbos que expresan gustos y preferencias.

También podéis hacer que vuestros alumnos trabajen por parejas y se pregunten sobre 5 cosas que les gustan y 5 que no les gustan:  “¿Qué (no) te gusta?” or “¿Qué prefieres?”. Una vez que hayan acabado, pueden compartir la información con el resto de sus compañeros usando “preferir”.
