Different reading techniques, same goal.

Different reading techniques, same goal.

Sue’s Y8 students have been doing independent reading. Some of the students here work on the shorter, caption-like texts on the news pages of ¿Qué Tal?. Other explore the longer article about young American actors with Latin-American roots. You’ll find downloads under the cut, as usual.

Download the pages here:

Pages 2 & 3, ever hear of "Ulama"?

Pages 4&5, bet you didn't know!

How do you fit independent reading into your MFL lesson? How do you encourage students to read for pleasure in the foreign language?

  1. When students like the subjects, when it is about what they like and what they are interested in, I think it is easy to convince them to know about their interests while reading in a foreign language. Moreover, if they already know everything about their favorite celebrity, they are more open to risk themselves to read about it in a foreign language because they kind of know that they will understand some of it. Reading for pleasure in a foreign language is easier when you read about what you like!
